Seized drugs from Cork haul believed to be MDMA

RTÉ News understands that forensic analysis on last week’s half tonne seizure of synthetic drugs at the Port of Cork has found it to be MDMA, rather than crystal meth as originally suspected.

The 546kg seizure came after a joint operation between gardaí and revenue.

The drugs were concealed in machinery which had been loaded onto a shipping container and was about to be transported to Australia.

At the time of the seizure, gardaí estimated the street value of the haul to be €32.8 million, subject to analysis.

That estimated street value is unaffected by confirmation that the drugs are MDMA.

Gardaí are continuing to question two men in their 40s in Co Kerry in connection with the seizure.

Detectives have until mid-morning tomorrow to charge or release the men.
