Retrial due in murder case as jury fail to reach verdict

The jury in the trial of a 36-year-old man accused of murder has failed to reach a verdict after more than 13 hours of deliberations.

Maurice Boland of Bridgeview Close, Tallow in Co Waterford, had denied murdering Cian Gallagher in November 2022 but had admitted manslaughter.

A jury at the Central Criminal Court was told that 26-year-old Mr Gallagher – who is from the Malahide Road in Dublin but was working on a construction project in Tallow – died from a brain bleed after he was allegedly punched and knocked to the ground by Mr Boland.

Maurice Boland later told gardaí it was a “pure accident”.

The jury spent 13 hours and 23 minutes considering their verdict but told Mr Justice Paul McDermott they had gone as far as they could go.

Judge McDermott discharged them and set a new date in November for a retrial.
