Remains found in Cork identified as Kieran Quilligan

A murder investigation has been launched after a post-mortem examination found that remains which were discovered in Cork earlier this week are those of Kieran Quilligan.

Mr Quilligan, 47, went missing from Cork city centre last September.

The remains were found by a garda with a search dog on the main Midleton to Whitegate road, around 5km from the village of Whitegate, just after midday on Monday.

This evening, gardaí say that the remains have been identified as those of Mr Quilligan, and his disappearance has now been upgraded to a murder investigation.
