Political, business figures pay respects to Tommie Gorman

Key political and business figures are among over 1,000 people queuing in Co Sligo to pay their respects to former RTÉ journalist Tommie Gorman.

The broadcaster and author died this week at the age of 68.

He retired from RTÉ in April 2021 after a career spanning 40 years.

Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern is among those gathered at the funeral home in Cartron Cross where Mr Gorman’s remains are reposing.

Also in the queue to pay their respects are former President Mary McAleese and her husband Martin.

Former Tánaiste and EU Commissioner Ray MacSharry queued alongside his son Marc, who is Independent TD for Sligo-Leitrim, and former Fianna Fáil politician Pat ‘the Cope’ Gallagher from Co Donegal.

Fine Gael TD Charlie Flanagan is also in attendance.

Businessman Denis O’Brien flew in from Portugal a short time ago to pay his respects before he travels to London.

Mr Gorman is survived by his wife Ceara Roche and their two children Moya and Joe.

His Requiem Mass will take place at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Ransboro, Co Sligo tomorrow afternoon at 2pm.

The funeral cortege will first make a farewell journey to The Showgrounds, the home of Mr Gorman’s beloved Sligo Rovers.

A guard of honour will join the funeral procession and walk alongside the hearse to the church.

Mr Gorman will be buried later at nearby Kilmacowen Cemetery.
