Outdoor alcohol consumption law extended for six months

Justice Minister Helen McEntee obtained Cabinet approval today for the extension of the Civil Law Act 2021 for a further period of six months, until 30 November 2024.

The Act introduced changes to allow for the sale and consumption of alcohol in ‘relevant outdoor seating areas’.

The relevant provisions of the Act can be extended for up to 6 months at a time by resolution of each House of the Oireachtas.

The extension is requested to give clarity to licensed premises, local authorities and An Garda Síochána.

This was a temporary, Covid-19 related provision to facilitate safer outdoor socialising.

The Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2024 currently under preparation will regularise the position with respect to outdoor seating areas on a permanent basis.
