Nine due in court over refugee centre protests

Nine people are due in court in Co Dublin this morning charged in connection with protests at a refugee centre in Ballyogan, in south Dublin.

The charges arise following a number of incidents at the centre, where the entrance was blocked, staff were prevented from entering and leaving and a gate was chained.

The nine – five men and four women – are accused of public order offences including failing to comply with a garda’s direction to leave the vicinity and preventing or interrupting the free passage of a person or vehicle.

One of the men is also charged in connection with the possession of a Stanley knife.

The nine are due before Dún Laoghaire District Court this morning.

It brings to 13 the number of people charged in connection with alleged offences at Ballyogan in the last two days.

Four other men appeared at Dublin District Court yesterday afternoon charged with public order offences.

The four are 53-year-old Rodger Long from Clay Farm Drive, Kilgobbin, Dublin 18; Jordan O’Donoghue, 21, of Ballyogan Avenue, Carrickmines, in Dublin 18; Conor Killian, 25, and from Little Brighton Road, Foxrock in south Co Dublin; and 44-year-old Ian Cahill of Ballyogan Vale, Ballyogan Road, Dublin 18.

They were remanded on bail to appear again at Dún Laoghaire court in June.
