Nine charged in relation to refugee centre protest

Five men and four women have been before Dún Laoghaire District Court charged with public order offences in relation to a protest at a centre for asylum seekers at Ballyogan in south Dublin.

The nine, aged between 20 and 60, were arrested yesterday evening during an incident at Ballyogan in Carrickmines.

Eight are charged with public order offences. One man is also charged with possession of a knife.

Six of those accused are from the local Dublin 18 and Dublin 16 areas; one man is from Coolock in north Dublin; another man is from Usher’s Island in the city centre, while a third man is from Co Carlow.

Those charged are 48-year-old Colin McGettrick from Viking Harbour, Usher’s Island in Dublin 8; David Noonan, 49, from New Oak Estate in Carlow; 33-year-old Lisa Burnett from Ballyogan Vale in Carrickmines, Dublin 18; Cathy Kennedy Byrne, 47, from Glenamuck Road in Dublin 18; Scott Cullen, 39 from Ballyogan Avenue in Carrickmines in Dublin 18; Danielle McGearty, 31, from Ash Hall, Larkfield in Dublin 18; Megan Isaacson, 20, from Hillview Grove Ballinteer in Dublin 16; Graham Carragher, 60, from Furry Hill Estate, Sandyford Dublin 18 and 33-year-old Sean Rush of Edenmore Avenue Coolock in Dublin 5.

Mr Rush is also charged with possessing a Stanley knife at the scene.

Gardaí objected to bail on the grounds that a member of staff was prevented from leaving the Ballyogan centre despite having a medical condition and there was a concern witnesses might be interfered with.

Judge Anne Watkin has granted bail in some cases on the strict condition that those accused stay away from the centre and sign on at a garda station daily.

The hearing is ongoing in the case of some of the other accused people.

Four others appeared at Dublin District Court yesterday afternoon charged with public order offences.

The four are 53-year-old Rodger Long from Clay Farm Drive, Kilgobbin, Dublin 18; Jordan O’Donoghue, 21, of Ballyogan Avenue, Carrickmines, in Dublin 18; Conor Killian, 25, and from Little Brighton Road, Foxrock in south Co Dublin; and 44-year-old Ian Cahill of Ballyogan Vale, Ballyogan Road, Dublin 18.

They were remanded on bail to appear again at Dún Laoghaire court in June.
