Murder trial may consider diminished responsibility

A jury in the trial of a 52-year-old man accused of the murder of his elderly neighbour will resume deliberating on a verdict on Monday.

Patrick McDonagh from Whitechapel Road, Clonsilla, Co Dublin has admitted to manslaughter but denies a charge of murdering 73-year-old Peter McDonald in July 2020.

The jury at the Central Criminal Court was told it may consider a special defence of diminished responsibility.

Mr McDonald died from multiple catastrophic injuries sustained in an attack by his neighbour.

The jury began deliberating shortly after midday today.

Mr Justice Michael McGrath was told one jury member could not attend court tomorrow and adjourned the case to Monday.
