Michael Fitzmaurice to join new Independent Ireland party

Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice is to join the new political party, Independent Ireland.

It was formed last November by Limerick County TD Richard O’Donoghue and Cork South West TD Michael Collins – who were both members of the Rural Independent Group in the Dáil.

They said many people were frustrated with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael but did not want to vote for Sinn Féin and Independent Ireland would provide them with an alternative.

Now their ranks have been boosted by the Independent TD for Rosommon – Galway, Michael Fitzmaurice.

In recent years Mr Fitzmaurice had suggested there was a real need for a political party to represent rural Ireland.

In a statement this morning he said that he “spent the last 12 months weighing up the landscape” and “was going to set up a party or leave politics”.

“Independent Ireland will be contesting upcoming elections with detailed election manifestos,” he added.

In a statement, Mr O’Donoghue said the party was delighted that Mr Fitzmaurice had joined Independent Ireland, as his experience and knowledge would be an invaluable asset in delivering real change and building a better future.
