Man questioned over alleged false imprisonment of woman

Gardaí in Co Mayo are continuing to question a man in his 40s who was arrested in connection with the alleged false imprisonment of a woman yesterday.

The man was detained following a public appeal for assistance in locating the van he was driving.

It was seen leaving Arklow, Co Wicklow, in the early hours of yesterday morning, prompting concerns for the safety of the woman, who was a passenger in the vehicle.

Gardaí sought the help of the general public, after initial investigations and reviews of CCTV footage failed to identify the location of the van.

Soon after the appeal was made, the yellow Renault Traffic was spotted in Co Mayo.

The driver of the van was arrested under Section 4 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

He was detained overnight at a local station and questioning resumed this morning.

The female passenger – who is in her 30s – is said to be safe and well following the incident.
