Man charged with attempted murder of senior PSNI officer

A 44-year-old man has been charged with the attempted murder of a senior police officer in Co Tyrone last year.

He will appear in court in Dungannon in the morning in connection with the shooting of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell.

Mr Caldwell was shot and seriously injured as he put footballs into the boot of his car after taking a youth team training session in Omagh in February 2023.

The 44-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder, directing terrorism and preparation of terrorist acts.

He was arrested on Thursday in the Dungannon area.

A property was searched at the time and a number of items taken for forensic examination.

A number of men are already before the courts charged in connection with the attempted murder of Mr Caldwell.

The shooting was claimed by the New IRA but detectives believed dissident republicans worked closely with a criminal gang to carry out the attack on someone they regarded as a joint enemy.
