Leo Varadkar’s final interview as Taoiseach

In his final interview as Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar spoke of his time in office and said one of his high points was his role in the Brexit negotiations.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Six One News, Mr Varadkar said as Taoiseach, he had a responsibility to prevent a hard border between north and south.

Mr Varadkar said another highlight of his career included leading the country during the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

The former Fine Gael leader added that he was proud of making Ireland a more modern place, with greater equality for women, LGBT people and other minorities.

“If there’s regret, it would be excessive caution at certain points. In 2011/2012, we never thought the economy would bounce back so quickly from the crash,” he said.

Mr Varadkar formally tendered his resignation to President Michael D Higgins at Áras an Uachtaráin this evening.
