Jeffrey Donaldson facing additional sex offence charges

Former DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson will face additional sex offence charges when he appears in court in Co Down tomorrow.

Police originally charged the 61-year-old with 11 offences, but he is now facing 18 charges after the Public Prosecution Service assessed the evidence file.

The former MP for Lagan Valley is charged with one count of rape, four of gross indecency and 13 charges of indecent assault.

His wife and co-accused, Eleanor Donaldson, is to face five charges, including aiding and abetting, one more than she originally faced.

Both deny the charges.

The offences are alleged to have occurred between 1985 and 2008 and involve two alleged victims.

The pair were arrested at their home on 28 March and charged by police and released on bail after a day of questioning.

They are due to appear at Newry Magistrates Court tomorrow for a preliminary enquiry to establish if there is sufficient evidence for the case to go to trial at the Crown Court.
