Irish man dies in incident off Algarve beach



An Irish man has died after getting into difficulties while swimming in Portugal.

Officials in Albufeira in the Algarve, said the alarm was raised yesterday afternoon after three people got into in difficulty in the sea at Inatel beach.

They were rescued by lifeguards, but a 52-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Portugal’s Maritime Authority said it is believed the incident unfolded when the man got into difficulty and two other people attempted to rescue him.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the case.

In a statement, a spokesperson said the department is providing consular assistance.
