Irish eyes on Horgan’s Bad Sisters at 75th Emmy Awards


There are high hopes for Irish success at Monday night’s Emmy Awards with Sharon Horgan’s hit comedy drama Bad Sisters being nominated in four categories.

The Bellewstown, Co Meath-raised writer, actor and comedian has been singled out for her performance as Eva Garvey in the pitch black comedy.

However, the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category is particularly competitive this year, with Sarah Snook (Succession), Keri Russell (The Diplomat), Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Melanie Lynskey (Yellowjackets) also in the running for the gong.

Horgan will also compete in the Writing for a Drama Series category where she is nominated alongside co-writer’s Dave Finkel and Brett Baer.

The nominees in this category include Jesse Armstrong (Succession), Mike White (The White Lotus), Craig Mazin (The Last of Us), Peter Gould (Better Call Saul), Gordon Smith (Better Call Saul) and Beau Willimon (Andor).

Dearbhla Walsh has been nominated for Outstanding Director for a Drama Series for her work on Bad Sisters where she will compete against Benjamin Caron (Andor), Peter Hoar (The Last of Us), Andrij Parekh (Succession), Mark Mylod (Succession), Lorene Scafaria (Succession) and Mike White (The White Lotus).

Meanwhile, Bad Sisters, which stars Anne-Marie Duff, Eva Birthistle, Sarah Greene and Eve Hewson, also got a nod in the Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series category.

Over in the Directing for a Comedy Series category, Wexford-born director Declan Lowney has been nominated for his work on the heartwarming Ted Lasso, where he will compete against Christopher Storer (The Bear), Bill Hader (Barry), Amy Sherman-Palladino (The Marvelous Mrs Maisel) and Tim Burton (Wednesday).

The final season of Succession dominated this year’s Emmy nominations with 27 nods, followed by The Last of Us (24), The White Lotus (23) and Ted Lasso (21).

The acclaimed HBO series picked up 14 acting nominations including nods for Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook.

It marks the first time in Emmys history that three performers from the same show have scored lead actor nominations in the same category.

The annual ceremony recognises the best in television excellence and is hosted by the US Television Academy.

The 75th annual Emmy awards will take place on Monday, 15 January at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
