Investigation into further arson incident at Clonmel site

Gardaí are investigating a suspected arson incident at a site in Clonmel, Co Tipperary being developed for modular housing for refugees.

The incident happened between 12am and 1am at the site at Heywood Road outside the town when a mobile lighting unit was set on fire.

It came just over four days after another incident at the site when security personnel engaged by contractors involved in preparatory work were assaulted by a number of individuals, according to gardaí, with one man hospitalised.

On that occasion, several vehicles, including two diggers, were damaged by fire.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses.

The site is owned by the Health Service Executive but is in the process of being transferred to the OPW to be developed for the Department of Integration for 82 modular homes for Ukrainian refugees.

There have been a number of protests at the site in recent weeks by people opposed to the modular housing plan.
