Harris speaks to three Independent TDs ahead of Dáil vote

Fine Gael leader Simon Harris has spoken to three Independent TDs seeking their support in next week’s vote in the Dáil to elect him as Taoiseach.

He discussed matters with Marc MacSharry, Seán Canney and Michael Lowry.

He will meet Denis Naughten, Cathal Berry and Noel Grealish in the coming days.

However, Mr Harris has ruled out doing deals with Independents.

The Government has a slim majority, but can usually rely on the support of some Independent deputies.

Mr MacSharry has already indicated that he will support Mr Harris in the vote on 9 April.

Speaking this evening, Mr Canney said he had spoken to Mr Harris about a wide range of issues facing the country and his constituency of Galway East.

These included challenges for small businesses and people with disabilities.

He said Mr Harris had promised to come back to him on a few queries so he had not yet made up his mind on next week’s vote.
