Govt set to formally recognise State of Palestine

The three leaders of the coalition Government are expected to announce that Ireland will formally recognise the State of Palestine during a news conference at 8am at Government Buildings.

Taoiseach Simon Harris, Tánaiste Micheál Martin and the Minister for the Environment Eamon Ryan briefed their Cabinet about the move yesterday.

It is believed more than one other EU member state will make a similiar announcement.

The Government’s move to recognise the State of Palestine has prompted criticism from Israel.

The Israeli foreign ministry claimed recognising Palestine outside of an over-arching regional peace deal would encourage terrorism.

However, a spokesman for the Irish Government said the nation will recognise the state of Palestine in order to keep the two state peace solution alive.
