Google takes court action against Irish data watchdog

Google has begun a High Court action against the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC).

The internet giant described the case as a procedural step to ensure that the initiation of an inquiry by the DPC is in full compliance with applicable law and to verify the legal basis of the complaint.

Google said that as the matter has not yet been formally opened it was limited in the information it could share.

The company said it is committed to working constructively with the DPC, and will continue to work closely with regulators across Europe.

The DPC is currently investigating Google over its ‘Real-Time Bidding’ online advertising system, the process of auctioning advertising space as people browse online.

A separate DPC inquiry relates to Google’s processing of location data.

It is understood the High Court action taken by Google this week is not linked to either the location data or real-time bidding inquiries.
