Gazan student sings to share hope for peace

A displaced medical student in Gaza has been playing music amid the rubble to entertain local children and share her hope for peace to the world.

Unable to continue with her studies, 19-year-old Rahaf Nasser spends her days playing songs on a borrowed guitar in the devastated streets of Deir al-Balah. She is also trying to convey messages about the war to the rest of world, she said.

The aspiring musician said she studied piano and Oud, a traditional string-instrument, at an institute in Gaza. She later taught herself how to play the guitar. When her family had to flee their home last October due to “continuous shelling”, she had to leave her instruments behind.

Despite her passion in music, Nasser hopes to be able to continue her medical degree.

“My hope is to be a doctor, to help my people, here in Gaza,” she said.

Israel has besieged Gaza since launching an offensive in retaliation for the 7 October Hamas-led attacks.
