Gardaí continuing to question woman over boy’s death

Gardaí are continuing to question a woman in her 30s following the death of a six-year-old boy in Co Waterford.

The child was found unresponsive in a car after emergency services were alerted to an incident at Rathmoylan near Dunmore East early yesterday.

He was pronounced dead in hospital later.

Gardaí said the results of a post-mortem examination will determine the course of their investigation.

The woman was arrested near the scene and is being detained at a garda station in Co Waterford, where she can be questioned for up to 24 hours.

Medical attention is also being made available to the woman as required while in custody.

A vigil will be held at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity in Waterford this evening to offer prayers for the boy’s family and the wider community who have been affected.

The Bishop of Waterford and Lismore said that the community of Dunmore East “will be devastated by this heartbreaking loss”.

Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan offered his “deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the young boy as they navigate through this time of immense grief and sorrow”.

In a statement, he also thanked the emergency services who responded to “this tragic incident”, for their professionalism and dedication.
