Garda sergeant charged with false imprisonment of woman



A garda sergeant has been charged with the false imprisonment of a woman, perverting the course of justice and burglary.

Ciaran Whelan, with an address in Nenagh, Co Tipperary appeared before Dublin District Court.

The 51-year-old was arrested as part of an investigation by An Garda Síochána’s Anti Corruption Unit into the activities of a particular garda unit based in the Dublin region.

Mr Whelan is charged with seven offences alleged to have been committed between June and September 2021.

Inspector Tom Cooney gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

He told the court he arrested Mr Whelan at Irishtown Garda Station just before 10am on 11 March and was present when he was charged with the offences a short time later.

Inspector Cooney said Mr Whelan made no reply after caution.

Mr Whelan is charged with the false imprisonment of a named woman at an address at Saint John’s Road West, Dublin on 7 September 2021

He is also charged with perverting the course of justice by making a false report to a superintendent on a date between 25 August 2021 and 15 September 2021 regarding a search carried out at a flat on Kenilworth Road in Dublin 6 on the 19 June 2021.

He also faces charges of theft at a flat on Kenilsworth Road on 19 June and at a flat on Mountjoy Square in Dublin 1 on 7 September 2021.

He is also charged with intent to pervert the course of justice by amending data on the Garda Pulse system on 27 September 2021.

Judge William Aylmer heard the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that he be sent forward for trial.

Mr Whelan was remanded on bail to appear in court again on 17 May when a book of evidence will be served.

A second garda, Mark Duffy, with an address at Dublin 15, appeared in court last week accused of perverting the course of justice and burglary.

Since the start of the investigation by the Anti Corruption Unit four members of An Garda Síochána have been suspended from duty.
