First series triumph for Ireland Sevens in Perth

Ireland’s Women’s Sevens won gold at the HSBC SVNS Series in Perth on Sunday morning, defeating hosts Australia 19-14 in the final.

It’s a first ever world series tournament victory for Ireland as they look to build momentum ahead of the Paris Olympics this summer.

Australia took an early 7-0 lead but Ireland hit back with a score from Amee-Leigh Murphy Crowe. Lucy Mulhall managed to make it 14-7 at the break with a close-range try.

The Aussies were level shortly after the resumption when Teagan Levi got over before Eve Higgins’ third try which proved to be the critical score at the Rectangular Stadium.

Ireland had defeated Great Britain in the semi-finals earlier in the day on a 31-7 scoreline to set up the decider against the home side.

The victory is the culmination of reaching the semi-finals of the Cape Town Sevens in mid-December, having finished fifth in Dubai the week before.

It was also a good morning for the men’s side as they took bronze following a 24-7 triumph over Fiji.
