Excise duty hikes on fuel kept under review

Excise duty hikes on petrol and diesel planned for August will be kept under review, the Taoiseach has told the Dáil today.

The Government had intended to fully restore the excise duty rates in August, which would result in an increase of four cent on petrol and three cent on diesel.

Simon Harris was responding to the Sinn Féin leader who urged him not to proceed with the hike.

Mary Lou McDonald said the Taoiseach was “talking big” in the lead up to next week’s elections but Government policies are directly raising costs for people.

She asked the Taoiseach not to increase the price of petrol and diesel in August and October.

There is a planned rise to the carbon tax on fuel in October.

Responding, the Taoiseach accused Sinn Fein of misleading people on the planned petrol and diesel increases.

He said people were not “thick” and Sinn Fein had proposed restoring excise duty on petrol and diesel as early as April.
