A man in his 80s has died following a two car collision in Co Westmeath earlier this morning, the second road fatality in the same area in the last 24 hours.
The man, who was a passenger in one of the cars, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, which occurred on the R394 at Gartlandstown, Castlepollard, at around 5.30am.
The driver, a woman in her 60s, was seriously injured and is being treated at the Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore.
Two men in the second car, aged in their 30s and 20s, were taken to hospitals in Mullingar and Tullamore, with what are described as non-life threatening injuries.
The road is closed and diversions are in place.
Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses, particularly any road users who have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the R394 between Mullingar and Castlepollard, between 4.45am and 5.45am are asked to contact Mullingar Garda Station on 044 938 4000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
The collision occurred in the same area where a man in his 40s died in a single-vehicle crash yesterday evening.
The man, who was travelling alone, was pronounced dead at the scene on the R395 at Teevrevagh in Castlepollard.
Four people have died on Irish roads in the last 24 hours, including a woman and her eight-year-old daughter in a collision in Co Mayo.
A total of 97 people have died on the roads so far this year.
