The operator of “The Portal”, linking Dublin and New York City, has confirmed that the live stream was interrupted this morning due to a “technical glitch” in the software.
In a statement, Portals.org said its technical team is looking into the cause of the outage to improve the stability of the livestream moving forward.
“The nature of the project, providing a 24/7 livestream, is such that sometimes interruptions will occur due to technical glitches, maintenance or simple software updates.
“Our teams (portals.org and AVSPL) are doing their best to ensure smooth and consistent operations in order to come as close as possible to a 24/7 active live stream.
“The Portals artwork is being built in the open since 2021, visible and in real time for the world to experience. This means there will be challenges along the way, however, our small team will try their best,”the company said.
The two portals form part of a public art project aiming to unite citizens via technology on either side of the Atlantic Ocean.
The sculpture allows for real-time interaction between Dubliners, New Yorkers and visitors to both cities.
Dublin’s portal faces onto O’Connell Street capturing both the GPO and the Spire.
The New York portal is located on the Flatiron South Public Plaza at Broadway, Fifth Avenue, and 23rd Street, one of the Big Apple’s most dynamic intersections.
The Portal is again live this afternoon and a spokesperson for Dublin City Council Culture Company claims that “250 million people” have seen both portals since the art sculpture was launched last Wednesday afternoon.
