Cyclist, 70s, dies in Dublin city centre collision



A man in his 70s has died following a collision between a car and a cyclist in Dublin city centre this morning.

The man was taken to St James’s Hospital following the collision on Dame Street at around 5.25am, where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the car is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Dame Street was closed for a technical examination of the scene, but has since reopened.

Gardaí are appealing to any witnesses, particularly anyone in the vicinity of Dame Street between 5am and 5.45am, and who may also have camera footage (including dash cam), to contact Pearse Street Garda Station on 01 666 9000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

The man’s death brings to 76 the number of people who have died on Irish roads since the beginning of the year.

Yesterday, a motorcyclist in his 40s died in collision on the M50 in Dublin.

On Thursday, a woman in her 50s died following a collision involving three cars, which occurred on the N17 at Ballindine near Claremorris in Co Mayo.
