Convicted murderer Bernard Fogarty found dead in prison

Convicted murderer Bernard Fogarty has died in Portlaoise Prison.

Fogarty, who was in his mid 30s, was found unresponsive in his cell earlier today.

His death is not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesperson for the Irish Prison Service confirmed that a person was found dead in their cell today, and that their family has been notified.

They said that an investigation into the death is under way and the exact cause will be determined by the Coroner’s Office.

In 2022, Fogarty, from north Dublin, was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of 40-year-old father-of-four Barry Wolverson.

Mr Wolverson was shot in Madigan’s Yard in Swords in January 2020.

He was taken to hospital where he remained for 13 months before passing away.

Robert Redmond of Steamville Road, Kilbarrack, in Dublin, was also convicted of Mr Wolverson’s murder and given a life sentence.

A court had previously heard how Fogarty was “heavily involved in organised crime” when he was handed a five-year sentence for possession of an RAK sub-machine.

He was also convicted of the attempted murder of Mark Ivers at a house in Coolock in September 2019.
