Closing arguments due in criminal trial of Donald Trump

Closing arguments are due in the criminal trial of former US President Donald Trump.

The former reality TV personality is facing 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal campaign finance donations just before the 2016 US presidential elections.

Judge Juan Merchant will give the jury directions on how they are to assess the evidence presented during this trial, in which the prosecution called 20 witnesses.

Witnesses that were called included Mr Trump’s former fixer Michael Cohen and adult film actor Stormy Daniels.

The closing arguments will be made by prosecutors from the district Attorney’s office and Trump’s defence lawyers,

The case will then pass to the jury of 12 New Yorkers, whose foreman is an immigrant from Ireland.

They will be the first jury in history to decide the guilt or innocence of a former US President.

In New York criminal law conviction or acquittal must be unanimous.

If just one juror dissents, a mistrial is declared.
