The nomination of Ireland’s next European Commissioner is due to be discussed by the three coalition leaders later today.
It’s expected that the Minister for Finance Michael McGrath will be put forward for the position.
His nomination is expected to be formally approved by the full Cabinet tomorrow.
Under the coalition deal, it was the turn of Fianna Fáil to choose the nominee to become Ireland’s next European Commissioner.
Following the recent European election, negotiations are under way around the composition of the next European Commission.
There was a desire in Government to select a candidate quickly, ahead of a European Council summit on Thursday and Friday.
Like all nominated European Commissioners, Mr McGrath will have to secure the approval of the European Parliament before he can take on the role.
The current commission is due to remain in office until November.
