A 36-year-old man has been charged with the murder of an Irish woman in New York last Saturday.

Sarah McNally, 41, a native of Longford town, died after she was stabbed at the Céilí House bar in Queens where she worked as a bartender.

Marcin Pieciak, 76th Street, Glendale, Queens was charged with the murder of his girlfriend and with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.

He faces up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said the attack was “unprovoked” and one which has shocked the community.

“It was unprovoked and a devastating loss for the family.

“We are using every resource to make sure there is accountability.”

The court heard Mr Pieciak also sustained self-inflicted stab wounds.

He is due to appear again tomorrow.
