Body recovered following search operation off Galway

The body of a man has been recovered following a search operation off the coast of Galway.

The remains of a man, thought to be those of a person who was reported missing on Thursday, were found on Maínis (Mweenish Island) in the last hour.

A multi-agency search operation was launched after the man got into difficulties while trying to retrieve a dinghy that had drifted from its mooring.

The search effort had been focused on an area from Oileán Mhic Dara to Ceann Mhása. South westerly winds had made conditions more challenging for those involved.

It is understood that the missing man was last seen trying to retrieve a dinghy which had drifted away from its mooring, after he and his wife had gone ashore during a sailing trip.

A mayday call was issued from a vessel near Oileán Máisean, a short distance offshore from Carna, shortly before 6pm on Thursday.

The rescue effort, led by the Irish Coast Guard, has now been stood down.
