Arrest over ‘concerning incident’ at Sligo ATU campus



A man was arrested on the Sligo campus of Atlantic Technological University (ATU) this afternoon following an incident there.

It is understood that the man was brandishing a knife and threatened students.

ATU confirmed there was a “concerning incident” on the campus grounds this afternoon in which “a member of the public gained unauthorised access and threatened students”.

“Thankfully,” the statement said, ” due to the swift response of our security team and the prompt intervention of the gardaí, the situation was brought under control without any injuries. We want to thank our security team, students, and staff for their quick response to this incident.”

Gardaí responded promptly to the situation and have taken the suspect into custody at Sligo garda station, according to ATU which said the university is cooperating fully with the authorities.

It has urged anyone with relevant video footage to assist gardaí by sending it directly to 085 870 2510, and avoiding sharing it on social media.

“As an institution, we take the safety and well-being of our students and staff very seriously,” the ATU said.

“We are actively working to review and strengthen our security measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
