Fianna Fáil has been forced to clarify its position on the nitrates derogation following comments from its Dublin MEP, Barry Andrews.
Tánaiste and party leader Micheál Martin has issued a statement where he said his party is “absolutely committed to applying for and securing the nitrates derogation at European level.”
He said Fianna Fáil’s policy is “crystal clear in this regard.”
Ireland is currently applying to the EU for its fifth derogation to the Nitrates Directive which is aimed at protecting water quality from agricultural pollution.
Ireland argues that there is a long growing season here so fields can absorb fertilisers and their use will not put water quality at risk.
